About PeppermintMan

PeppermintMan is a family business based in Jena, Thuringia. The company behind the brand has existed since 2003, and we launched the PeppermintMan brand in 2016.

We distribute loose tea, herbs, spices, and freeze-dried fruits.

Yes. PeppermintMan is run by mother, father, and son. In total, nine people work at our two locations in Jena and Dresden.

Direct, personal contact with our farmers and suppliers is important to us: we focus on direct marketing, fair purchasing prices, and sustainable agriculture.

We work directly with farms and often buy without intermediaries. Part of our range comes from German cultivation, including our Thuringian herbs and spices such as marjoram, thyme, and savory, as well as some peppermint varieties. We source other products from European farms. Items such as ashwagandha or mate tea are sourced from their respective growing regions worldwide.

We label products grown and processed in the Thuringia region as Thuringian herbs and spices. These include, among others, marjoram, thyme, and savory. Traditional spices that are used, for example, for the Thuringian bratwurst.

A portion of our product range is organically certified. These items are marked as "Organic" in the shop and are grouped together in the ORGANIC category. Our organic inspection body is DE-ÖKO-006.

No. Our teas, herbs, and spices consist exclusively of the plant-based ingredients listed. There are no artificial flavorings, added sugar, or preservatives. Our freeze-dried fruits are 100% fruit, with no additives.

Our products are also available in grocery stores (REWE, EDEKA, Globus).

We do not have our own retail store: Our locations in Jena and Dresden are offices without sales counters.

Other sources for our products include Amazon, eBay, Shop Apotheke, and Temu.

In freeze-drying, the fruit is first frozen. In a vacuum, the frozen water then transitions directly from a solid to a gaseous state without becoming liquid. The fruit is not heated during this process: it retains its shape, color, and aroma, and becomes light and crispy.

In air-drying, the water is removed using heat. The fruit shrinks, becomes chewy or leathery, and darkens.

Both are dried fruits, but their production and consistency differ significantly. Dried fruits usually refer to air-dried fruits such as raisins, dates, or apricots, which are soft and chewy.

Freeze-dried fruits, on the other hand, are crunchy, melt in the mouth, and retain the color of the fresh fruit.

Rubbed means that the dried leaves have been stripped from the stem and coarsely crushed without being ground into a powder.

As a result, rubbed herbs retain more essential oils than ground ones and are easier to portion. You will find this term used on our site for marjoram, thyme, and savory, for example.

True tea comes exclusively from the tea plant Camellia sinensis. This includes green, black, white, and oolong tea. They differ only in how they are processed, not in the plant itself.

Herbal and fruit teas consist of other plants and are legally classified as "tea-like products." Rooibos and mate also do not belong to the tea plant.

All teas made from the Camellia sinensis tea plant contain caffeine – this includes green, black, white, and oolong tea. Mate also contains caffeine.

Herbal teas, fruit teas, rooibos, and lupin coffee are naturally caffeine-free.

Lupine coffee is made from the roasted seeds of the sweet lupin, a legume that is also grown in Germany. It contains no coffee beans and is naturally caffeine-free.

In terms of taste, it is mild and nutty, with less acidity and bitterness than bean coffee. You can prepare it like filter coffee or in an espresso maker.

Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a climbing plant from the gourd family. It grows in Southern China and Southeast Asia; the dried leaves are used.

The taste is slightly sweet and grassy. The plant is used traditionally in China.

In Germany and the EU, we sell Jiaogulan exclusively as potpourri.

Preparation & Storage

As a guide: one level teaspoon, approximately 2 g, per 200 ml of water. Herbal and fruit teas are looser and less dense, so you will often need one and a half to two teaspoons for the same result.

Weighing is more accurate than measuring by the spoonful: a teaspoon holds significantly more of a fine-leaf green tea than of coarsely cut herbs.

Temperature has a greater influence on taste than quantity. Water that is too hot releases bitter compounds in green tea, making it astringent.

  • Green tea: 70–80 °C, 1–3 minutes
  • Black tea: 95–100 °C, 3–5 minutes
  • Mate: 70–80 °C, 3–5 minutes
  • Rooibos: 100 °C, 5–7 minutes
  • Herbal tea: 100 °C, 5–10 minutes
  • Fruit tea: 100 °C, 8–10 minutes

Without a thermometer: boil the water and let it sit uncovered for about ten minutes for green tea, then it will be at around 80 °C.

For real tea, yes. Green tea can be steeped two to three times. Increase the steeping time slightly for the second infusion. Black tea releases most of its aroma during the first infusion.

Herbal tea, fruit tea, and rooibos are hardly worth a second infusion. Generally, steep them promptly: damp leaves should not be left sitting for hours.

Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Tea absorbs foreign odors quickly, so do not store it uncovered next to coffee or spices.

In a closed tin away from direct sunlight, black and herbal teas will last for two to three years. Green tea loses its aroma more quickly and should be consumed within one year.

Freeze-dried fruits absorb moisture from the air and become soft as a result. Seal the package well after opening or transfer the contents to an airtight container.

Store in a dry place at room temperature. The humidity in the refrigerator is too high.
